Mexico's Hottest Trophy Bass Fishery!

Lake El Salto is located deep in the heart of the rugged Sierra Madre mountain range, approximately a 1-1/2 hour drive north of the vacation beach city of Mazatlan. Your scenic trip from the airport to the lodge will take approximately 90 minutes and you'll ride in comfort in an air-conditoned vehicle on a paved road. El Salto is a 24,000 acre impoundment, stretching 20 miles long and offers 45 miles of shoreline. Because of an abundance of structure and cover, and an abundant food source, El Salto offers some of the very best largemouth bass fishing in the world. The lake was formed by the damming of the Elota River. The scenery, simply put, is superb. This great bassin' factory was originally stocked with Florida-strain bass in the fall of 1986. The bass at lake El Salto have matured at a fantastic rate because of a fantastic forage base and the catch-and-release practices adhered to by Angler's Inn. Shad were successfully stocked 4 years after the lake opened and other forage species, like tilapia and crawfish are abundant and offer El Salto's trophy bass excellent nutrition for fast growth. El Salto is the perfect lake for any angler seeking a true trophy bass, one in excess of ten pounds. Literally thousands of bass over 10 pounds have been caught and released at this great bass factory! In fact, no other bass lake in the world can boast as many 10-pund trophies as El Salto in the past two years. Every year the lake record keeps being challenged by yet another monster Bass! The lake record of 18 pounds-8 ounces was caught in early September 2000, by Tony Orlando. Many lunkers in the 8-14lb range are caught every week from October through June! El Salto is with out a doubt the "Heavy Weight Contender" of Bass Lakes, anywhere!

Weather at El Salto

The weather is dependent upon the season you visit El Salto. The evening and morning hours are cool because of the cool crisp mountain air of the Sierra Madre mountains. A jacket is a necessity during these times. As the day progresses, it typically heats up to between 80 and 88 degrees (depending on what month you visit the lake). Occasional showers do occur, so a rain-suit is a must.

The Fishing at El Salto

While it is true that the most experienced anglers return each day with reports of phenomenal catches, even novice anglers quickly learn the ways of El Salto's bass and land them in numbers that they could never attain in the US. Typically, the early morning hours offer fantastic topwater action. Historically, the best baits have been Pop-R's, Zara Spooks, prop baits and buzzbaits. This is dependent on the moon phase, however, as well as time of the year. As the sun rises overhead, switch to a deeper approach using spinnerbaits, worms, lizards and crankbaits.

For some reason, El Salto's largemouths, especially lunker-sized ones, are attracted to the large size crankbaits and mega-size soft plastics. Cast these crankbaits and soft plastic baits to points, flooded timber, canyon walls, humps and submerged brush as you prospect for the large schools which are commonplace on El Salto. Find the right structure and you might land 30 fish in 35 casts, averaging in excess of five pounds. El Salto can also produce large numbers of bass, it is not uncommon to catch 40-80 bass per day depending on fishing conditions and fishing experience. If you are looking for chances at bass over 10 pounds Lake El Salto is unquestionably the best lake in the world and maybe even the best bass lake ever. While you are enjoying the scenery and the great Bassin', you will be fishing in comfort. The Tracker boats are outfitted with Mercury and Yamaha outboards, Minn Kota trolling motors, Lowrance electronics, swivel seats, coast guard-approved life jackets, dual batteries and dual gas tanks. Your seasoned professional guide (averaging 13 years of experience) sits in the rear of the boat, out of the way, so that you will have plenty of room to fight that Bass of your dreams. The guides know the waters of El Salto like the back of their hands, and I assure you that they will do everything in their power to put you on fish. They are also very helpful in showing you what lures and presentations are working in the water you are fishing.

Non-Angler Activities at El Salto
